MARYVILLE, TN – The air at the Smithview Pavilion was filled with more than just the scent of a celebratory dinner on Thursday night; it was filled with the spirit of "service above self." Blount County Schools (BCS) hosted the annual Go Be Excellent Awards, a prestigious banquet dedicated to honoring the classified employees who serve as the foundation of the district’s success.

The event, which has become a cornerstone of district culture, was made possible through the generous sponsorship of the Blount County Education Foundation (BCEF). Their support provided a beautiful setting for the men and women who keep the gears of the school system turning to be recognized by their peers and community leaders.

From the bus loops and cafeterias to the front offices and maintenance shops, the evening highlighted the essential roles that keep the district’s heart beating. While teachers often occupy the primary spotlight, the Go Be Excellent Awards ensure that the "unsung heroes" who work behind the scenes receive their well-deserved standing ovation.

Night of Stars

The atmosphere was electric as nominees from across the county gathered at the pavilion, representing every facet of school operations. The evening culminated in the announcement of the Countywide Winner, an honor bestowed upon Brad Roberts from the Finance department at the Central Office. Known for his meticulous attention to detail and unwavering support of district operations, Roberts received a warm round of applause.

Josh Tidwell, BCS Supervisor of Human Resources, noted the significance of the evening.

"The Go Be Excellent Banquet is a true highlight of the year for Blount County Schools," Tidwell said. "It’s our chance to step back and celebrate the incredible people who keep our district running behind the scenes."

Celebrating Categories of Excellence

The awards spanned the full spectrum of district support, proving that excellence has many faces in Blount County:

Instructional & Special Education: Kelly Ziehl (MSES) and Ginger Yearout (RES) were recognized for their vital roles in the classroom, providing the specialized support that allows every student to thrive.

Front Line Support: Christy Holder (HMS) took home the Office Staff award, while Darlene Black was honored for her reliability as a substitute through ESS.

Campus Care: The dedicated teams that keep schools safe, clean, and fed were cheered loudly as Terry Shields (MVES) won for Custodial Services, Summer Ruiz (WES) for School Nutrition, and Gary Hannah for Maintenance.

Student Wellbeing: The district’s commitment to health and safety was highlighted by winners Jennifer Wilson, LPN (Health Services) and Annette Reed (Bus Driver, Reed Bus Service).

Community & Leadership: Jill Russell (LES) was honored for her leadership within the Friends Program.

Tidwell emphasized that these roles are foundational to the student experience.

"Whether they are maintaining our buildings, providing instructional support, or ensuring our kids get to school safely, these essential staff members are the backbone of our students' academic and emotional growth," he remarked.

Legacies and Protection

The evening also took a poignant turn to honor those who have dedicated their entire careers to the children of Blount County. David Anderson (EES) and David Hannah (PRES) were given a special tribute as they prepare for retirement, leaving behind decades of service and a lasting impact on their respective schools.

Additionally, the district’s School Resource Officers—Deputies Samantha Baliles, Tanya Nadeau, Natalie McMurray, and Derek Evans—were recognized for their steadfast commitment to campus safety. Though no individual winner is named in this category, the collective gratitude of the district for their protection was palpable.

As the night concluded, the message was clear: whether it’s balancing a budget, driving a mountain route, or providing a helping hand in a special education classroom, every member of the BCS family plays a part in the district’s mission.

"It’s one of our favorite events because it brings the BCS family together to share a meal, enjoy great fellowship, and give a well-deserved standing ovation to a truly terrific group of people," Tidwell concluded.

Congratulations to all the 2026 nominees and winners. You truly are Blount County Strong.
